The Nürburgring weekend marked the penultimate round of the GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup, and another major test in one of the most competitive grids in global GT3 racing. For Reece Barr and the #23 McLaren 720S crew, it was a weekend defined by fine margins, relentless pace, and moments of pure intensity. It was the kind of race that reminds you why GT3 racing holds such magic.
The circuit itself is one of the most technical and demanding on the calendar, surrounded by the Eifel forest and known for its unpredictable weather. “It is a proper driver’s track,” said Reece. “Every corner rewards commitment but punishes the smallest mistake. You have to be switched on from the first lap.”
After a strong showing in practice, the team approached qualifying with confidence. Conditions shifted throughout the sessions, and timing became crucial. For Reece’s run, the rain made its first appearance just as he joined the track, adding another layer of difficulty. Despite the slippery surface, he pushed hard to keep the tyres in their operating window and delivered a top-ten overall lap, showcasing both precision and confidence in the car’s balance. “It was tricky,” he said. “The grip was falling away every lap, but I knew if I kept the tyres alive, we could still put in a strong time.”
The race start was as intense as ever, with more than 50 GT3 cars fighting for position into Turn 1. Reece made it through the chaos with no contact, maintaining position through the opening laps before settling into a strong rhythm. As his stint unfolded, he began to move forward, overtaking consistently and bringing the #23 McLaren up to fourth in class before handing over the car. “That first stint was all about patience and precision,” said Reece. “Everyone was aggressive early on, but once I found clean air, the pace came to us. The car felt really strong.”
The #23 crew continued to deliver consistent stints throughout the race, staying clear of incidents and showing the same front-running pace that has defined their season.
“It was not an easy one, but I am proud of how we performed,” said Reece. “We had an issue in the last stint costing us the podium but we we came back for a solid top 5 finish. We will carry what we've learned into the final round.”
A demanding and high-stakes weekend at one of Europe’s great circuits, the Nürburgring once again delivered a true endurance test. For Barr and the #23 McLaren crew, it was another step forward in a season defined by grit, teamwork, and belief in what lies ahead.
